Here’s where a young Jazz percussionist could get in trouble performing at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. Known for Folk, Blues and Jazz ala Al Jareau…Oscar Brown, Jr. performed as a one man show. Toured many years with his show…”Faces of Oscar Brown, Jr.” This is where I cut my teeth as a professional drummer on the west coast. Can’t get a good look at Floyd Morris on piano, but that's Bobby Haynes on bass.

Many students have come through my Los Angeles studio. I was asked by Paramount Pictures to instruct Mary Stuart Masterson for her role as Watts, drummer for a rock band in the 1987 motion picture “ Some Kind Of Wonderful”. With 4 weeks or so of instruction, Mary was proficient enough to do all the drum parts in the movie. She was very convincing….since I was Technical Advisor on the movie as well.

One of the best rehearsal bands in Los Angeles, the Paul Hubbard Big Band performed everywhere there was to play. Here’s an intense performance at the Sybil Brand Institute for Women. Yes…that’s right…a prison with all women. We’ll say no more about that…but what an evening!

I had the honor and opportunity to share a moment with movie star Danny Glover on the occasion of “Tribute To Nelson Mandela” in Atlanta. The evening was highlighted by a performance with the African-American Philharmonic Orchestra at Atlanta’s Symphony Hall.

What a dashing young figure in my early days as band director at Northwestern High School in Jacksonville, FL Our performances from 1957-1963 took the small Class EE to Class AA school all over the state. This band was created from scratch and performed at concerts, stadiums, parades and professional football games. You can’t see the venue…but this was the Gator Bowl, circa1962.

Here I am swingin’ with the inimitable Billy Daniels while performing at the Baby Grand West night club back in 1970. The band was contracted by me and conducted by Benny Payne. We were a very tight group for this venue. Ah, the life of a professional musician! Left to right: Benny Payne, conductor, Harper Cosby on bass, Billy Daniels , Billy Moore on drums, Fred Jackson on alto saxophone and Edwin Pleasants on tenor saxophone.

Here’s a recent photo with The Sentimental Journey Orchestra, Atlanta, GA 17 instrumentalists and 3 vocalists comprise the SJO orchestra. For twenty-five years , these dedicated musicians have kept alive the Big Band sounds of the ‘30s thru ‘50s, but their "book" extends well into the '90s as well. Here we are performing at the opening of the recently renovated Biltmore Hotel.

Just a sampling of my huge collection of percussion instruments. All of these were necessary and useful while I was pursuing, and performing, gigs as a studio percussionist during my years in Los Angeles and Hollywood!
